What can Georgian fairy tales tell about the culture and character of the people?
About
Fairy tales may sometimes seem like simple stories or children's entertainment, but their plots often hide representations of good, evil, and the structure of the world. Therefore, through fairy tales, one can see how people explained reality, what they feared, and what they believed in.
In the lecture, we will learn:
- what distinguishes Georgian fairy tales from those of other peoples of the Caucasus;
- how folk beliefs and Christian traditions intertwine in Georgian folklore;
- who Natsarkekia and Khutkunchula are, and why they became important characters in folk culture.
The lecture will be conducted by ethnographer Giorgi Mamarjashvili.
