New Tiflis. Tour of the Left Bank
About
Tour of Non-Touristy Tbilisi
Until the 19th century, the two banks of the Mtkwari River lived different lives: the right bank was bustling with trade and the city was growing, while the left bank remained a quiet outskirts with villages and gardens. However, when German settlers from Swabia moved to the left side of the city, the city's appearance changed.
What we will discuss on the tour:
- why the left bank became a territory for architectural experiments;
- what remains of the German heritage and where to find Tbilisi modernism;
- how the development of the neighborhood is connected to Mount Ararat and a volcanic eruption in Indonesia;
- where on the left bank to eat the tastiest lobio and pishki, for which locals line up every day.
The tour will be conducted by Eka Eliseeva — a Kartvelologist and researcher of Tbilisi.
