The first Christians in Abkhazia
About
On March 25, historian and anthropologist Giorgi Mamardashvili, a staff member of the National Museum of Georgia, will discuss how traditional religion developed in the territory of Abkhazia.
We will recall the legends about the preaching of Christ's disciples in the Caucasus, talk about early Christian communities in Pitsunda, and discuss why even after the spread of Christianity, people continued to worship trees and natural forces.
We will explore how over time, paganism, Christianity, and Islam intertwined in Abkhazian tradition and how these processes are related to the history of the region.
The lecture will be conducted in Russian
